Raised in poverty. (his father ran away.) Karnoffskys, a family of Lithuanian Jews, helped him and purchased a cornet from a pawn shop for him.

Dropped out of school and joined a quartet to make money when he was 11 yrs old. He went juvenile after arrested. Then, he played in rass bands and riverboats in New Orleans.
